Given below are two statements, one is labelled us Assertion (A) and the other as Reason (R). Assertion (A) : The Labour force participation rate falling sharply in the recent years for females in India. Reason (R) : The decline in labour force participation rate is due to the improved family income and increase in education.

The correct answer is B.

The assertion is true. NSSO data showed female labour force participation falling from about 37% in 2004-05 to about 23% in 2017-18, a sharp drop for a period of rising GDP. The reason is also partly true: rising household incomes and longer schooling are among the causes cited in the Economic Survey and NSSO analyses. But it is not a sufficient explanation. Much of the fall is read as women withdrawing from weak rural and casual work, the discouraged-worker effect, and a shortage of suitable jobs. So R gives one contributing factor, not the explanation of A.

Note: the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) from 2017-18 onwards uses a revised methodology, and later rounds show female participation rising again. Check the latest data when you revise.

Trap: aspirants assume that because income and education rose, R must explain A. Check whether the reason gives the full cause or only one part.
