Who was the ruler of Golkonda when Aurangzeb seized the fort of Golkonda in 1687?
Year Asked: 2020
Correct Answer
A. Abul Hasan Qutb Shah
Detailed Explanation
Abul Hasan Qutb Shah, also called Tana Shah, was the last ruler of the Qutb Shahi dynasty of Golconda. Aurangzeb besieged the fort from 1686, and it fell in October 1687, largely because of betrayal by some of its own officials. Abul Hasan was taken prisoner, sent to Daulatabad (Devagiri) on a pension, and the Qutb Shahi kingdom was annexed to the Mughal empire.
Why the others are wrong:
- Sikandar Adil Shah was the last ruler of Bijapur (Adil Shahi dynasty). Bijapur fell to Aurangzeb in 1686, a year before Golconda, which is why he tempts candidates.
- Ali Adil Shah II was an earlier Bijapur ruler (1656 to 1672), so he is out of time.
- Shayasta Khan was a Mughal noble and governor, not a Deccan sultan.
Core concept: the Mughal conquest of the Deccan sultanates under Aurangzeb and the end of independent Deccan states. Mains angle: the fall of these states shaped the rise of the Marathas and the later Hyderabad state, and it shows how defections within a court can collapse a kingdom.
Trap: candidates mix up Bijapur and Golconda, both lost in the same campaign, and pick Sikandar Adil Shah because he was the last ruler of the Bijapur dynasty.
