Given below are two statements, one is labeled as Assertion (A) and the other as Reason (R) : Assertion (A) : The nature of Indian Political System embodies the elements of 'continuity and change'. Reason (R) : The Indian Political System contains the elements of the following political system such as the modern style, the traditional style and saint style. Select the correct answer from the codes given below.

The correct answer is A. Both the assertion and the reason are true, and the reason actually explains the assertion.

The assertion says Indian politics combines continuity and change. Rudolph and Rudolph's idea of the 'modernity of tradition' captures this. Indian politics runs on modern institutions such as elections, parliamentary government and party competition, while traditional loyalties of caste, kinship and region persist inside them. The reason lists three styles: the modern style, the traditional style and the saint style, meaning the moral and Gandhian idiom of public life. Each style carries a different strand of continuity or change, and their coexistence is the mechanism that produces the blend.

• Option B is wrong because it denies the explanatory link. The mix of styles is the reason the system shows both continuity and change.
• Option C is wrong because the reason is a valid description of the system's mixed character.
• Option D is wrong because the assertion is a standard characterisation of Indian politics.

This links to the Mains theme of how the Constitution's liberal framework coexists with social structures, and to the debate on caste and identity in electoral politics.

Trap: Candidates mark B because the reason looks like a list of examples rather than an explanation. Ask whether the reason accounts for the assertion. Here it does.
