Who among the following Director won the Oscar Award for the best motion picture in 2021 for the movie "Nomadland"?

The correct answer is A) Chloé Zhao. The option is misspelt as 'Chole', but it refers to her. Her film Nomadland won Best Picture at the 93rd Academy Awards, held in April 2021 for films released in 2020. She also won Best Director, becoming only the second woman to do so after Kathryn Bigelow, and the first Asian woman.

Why the others are wrong:

• Emerald Fennell directed Promising Young Woman, which won Best Original Screenplay, not Best Picture.
• Lee Isaac Chung directed Minari, which earned him a Best Director nomination but no win.
• Thomas Vinterberg directed Another Round, which won Best International Feature Film, not Best Picture.

The core concept is the difference between the Best Picture award, which goes to the film, and the Best Director award. In Mains, Zhao's win is useful for discussing representation of women and Asians in global cinema and the Oscars.

Trap: Candidates often confuse the year of the ceremony with the year of release. Check which films the question means before choosing an answer.
