UPSC IAS - 2011
The jet aircrafts fly very easily and smoothly in the lower stratosphere. What could be the appropriate explanation? 1) There are no clouds or water vapour in the lower stratosphere. 2) There are no vertical winds in the lower stratosphere. Which of the statements given above is/are correct in this context?
Year Asked: 2011
Correct Answer
B. 2 only
Detailed Explanation
The correct answer is B. Statement 2 is correct: the lower stratosphere, roughly 10 to 20 km above the tropopause, is stable because temperature rises with height, which suppresses vertical air movement and convection. Air moves mainly horizontally, giving aircraft a smooth ride. This is why jet cruising altitudes lie in this zone.
Statement 1 is wrong. The stratosphere is very dry, but it is not free of water vapour. Thin cirrus-type clouds and polar stratospheric clouds do form in it, especially over the poles in winter. The real point is that weather-producing clouds and turbulence are rare there, not that they are absent.
Option A fails because statement 1 is false. Options C and D fail for the same reason.
The core concept is atmospheric stability and the temperature structure of the stratosphere, which also limits vertical mixing. This links to the Physical Geography atmosphere chapter and to Mains questions on aviation weather and jet streams.
Trap: Aspirants see a textbook-style phrase like 'no clouds' and mark statement 1 as true. Check absolute words in statements against the actual physical reason.
