Methane hydrate is a crystalline solid that consists of a methane molecule surrounded by a cage of interlocking water molecules . They are only formed in favourable temperature and pressure conditions. Methane Hydrate deposits may be several hundred meters thick and generally occur in two types of settings: under Arctic permafrost, and beneath the ocean floor. With an increase in global warming, there’ll be a corresponding increase in the ocean temperature which will in-turn trigger the release of methane gas by destabilising methane hydrate. Methane is a short-lived gas in the atmosphere and oxidizes by reacting with hydroxyl radical (OH - ).
